Word Of God Speak

Hearing from God fascinates me. I have been reading in I Kings this morning and am struck by how the Lord spoke to prophets and through prophets. God gave them insight into the times they lived and daily instruction.

These prophets did not have the luxury of God's Word but they were still able to hear from God. Now that we have access to the holy scriptures what excuse can we make for not hearing the word of the Lord.? Could it be that we do not read the Bible or meditate on the truth found there habitually?

While we have unprecedented access to God's Word I wonder how many take advantage of it. We have multiple translations. You can read the Bible in the Old King James as well as contemporary English and almost every other language in the world. There are electronic Bibles and Bible apps for smart phones. They have one year Bibles organized for devotional readings. Some even have the Bible on cd or their iPod where somebody reads the scriptures. A person could actually drive down the road and listen to the scriptures. Through these technologies we have unprecedented access to God's Word.

This does not even take into account available religious broadcasting on television, radio, or the internet. If we are not hearing from the Lord clearly and consistently is it because we do not sit with open Bible and read prayerfully and thoughtfully. No generation has ever had such access to hear God speak as we do.

I have many spiritual heroes from days gone by. Nobody inspires me to read my Bible more than the old prayer warrior and man of faith George Mueller. He read his Bible through from Genesis to Revelation 100 times. Not content to stop there, before he died he read the Bible through another 100 times while kneeling each time he read. After reading through the sacred scriptures 200 times in his lifetime it is no wonder God strengthened his faith and used him so powerfully.

While none of us is a George Mueller we can still make scripture reading and meditation a normal part of our lives. In this way I am convinced we will hear from God over and over again. God will use His word to instruct us, guide us, comfort us, exhort us, rebuke us, convict us, inspire us, call us, and move us.

The greatest thing He does is to reveal Himself to us. He does that through the gospel message for those who do not know Jesus Christ as Savior. To His children He does that so we might know Him and make Him known to others.

Go ahead. Pull that Bible off the shelf or night stand. Open that Bible app and start reading slowly and systematically. Make it a life long habit like George Mueller and you too will hear the Lord speak to you regularly.

The music group Mercy Me wrote a popular song a few years ago titled, "Word Of God Speak." That should be the prayer and expectation of every child of God. Lord, please speak to us through Your Word. We want to hear fresh words fromYou. In Jesus' name, amen.
